Remember that the outsides don’t always match the insides, so some of these observations may or may not be what the speller is actually feeling. It is just important to eliminate as many “surprises” as possible to avoid making a situation even more unsettling for the speller. I don’t like to discuss a speller in front of them during a session, I want to offer the speller respect and privacy until they can advocate and explain for themselves.
